Biography

Victor Madrigal-Borloz is a Lecturer at Harvard Law School and serves as the Eleanor Roosevelt Senior Visiting Researcher at the Harvard Law School Human Rights Program. His career includes a significant appointment as the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, a role he held from January 2018, with subsequent renewals until 2020. He has been instrumental in assessing the implementation of international human rights law and has engaged in dialogues with relevant stakeholders to raise awareness and provide advisory services. Previously, he served as the Secretary-General of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims from 2013 to 2019. He was also part of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture from 2013 to 2016. His work includes drafting policies concerning LGBTI persons and leading litigation at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Madrigal-Borloz has held influential roles in various organizations such as the Danish Institute of Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. He is a founding member of the Costa Rican Association of International Law and the International Justice Resource Centre.
