Dr. Victor Shih

Biography

Victor Shih is a professor at the University of California San Diego, holding the Ho Miu Lam Chair in China Pacific Relations and serving as the Director of the 21st Century China Center. He specializes in the politics of Chinese banking policies, fiscal policies, exchange rates, and elite politics in China. Shih is known for his work on topics including the dynamics of elite conflict and the impact of inflation on Chinese finance. He has authored several influential books, such as 'Factions and Finance in China: Elite Conflict and Inflation' and 'Coalitions Weak: Elite Politics in China Mao’s Stratagem Rise Xi,' both published by Cambridge University Press. Additionally, he edited 'Economic Shocks and Authoritarian Stability: Duration, Institutions, and Financial Conditions,' published by the University of Michigan Press. His academic publications appear in leading journals, including the American Political Science Review and Journal of Politics. Shih's courses cover essential aspects of Chinese politics, such as financing the Chinese miracle and methods in Chinese political science. Before joining UC San Diego, he served as a professor at Northwestern University and worked at the Carlyle Group. Shih has an extensive background in eliciting detailed biographical information on elites in China, maintaining significant databases for his research.
