Dr. Victoria Orphan

Biography

Professor Victoria J. Orphan is a prominent figure in the field of Environmental Science and Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. She holds the title of James Irvine Professor and is the Allen V. C. Davis Lenabelle Davis Leadership Chair at the Center for Environmental Microbial Interactions. She has contributed significantly to the understanding of molecular microbial ecology and anaerobic communities, particularly in the context of carbon and sulfur cycling. Orphan's research involves the development of innovative applications that combine molecular and isotopic methods, allowing insights into uncultured microorganisms and their roles in biogeochemical processes. Following her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1994, she went on to complete her Ph.D. in 2002. She began her academic career as an Assistant Professor at Caltech from 2004 to 2010, later advancing to Associate Professor in 2010, and subsequently to Professor in the same year. In 2016, she took on the role of Irvine Professor, and in 2020, she became the Director of the Center for Environmental Microbial Interactions.
