Biography

Victoria Saramago is an Associate Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago. She earned her PhD from Stanford University in 2015 and specializes in Hispanic Luso-Brazilian Studies. Her research primarily focuses on twentieth- and twenty-first-century Latin American literatures and cultures, with a particular emphasis on Brazilian studies and the environmental humanities. Saramago explores the intricate relationships between literature and the environment, particularly in how fictional works represent and critique real-world environmental issues such as deforestation and urbanization. Her notable publication, 'Fictional Environments: Mimesis, Deforestation, Development in Latin America,' published in 2021, investigates the role of literature in shaping ecological consciousness. She has received multiple awards for her contributions to the field, including the prestigious Roberto Reis Book Award in 2022. In addition to her teaching and research, Saramago co-edits several critical works that explore the intersections of literature, art, and environmental studies in the context of Latin America and beyond.
