Biography

Dr. Van received a BASc degree in engineering physics from Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, and a PhD degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. He is a recipient of the NSERC Doctoral Prize in 2001. In 2000-2001, he served as a research associate at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences, University of Maryland, College Park. After a brief period in the industry, he joined the University of Alberta in 2005 and currently holds the position of Professor and Director of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests focus on the design, simulation, and fabrication of micro-nanophotonic devices and their applications in fiber optics communication, optical signal processing, and optical sensing.
