Biography

Vijay Balasubramanian is a theoretical physicist whose research interests revolve around natural systems that manipulate information, leading to new forms of self-organization. He has worked on fundamental questions regarding the nature of space-time, particularly how the apparent loss of quantum information in the presence of black holes relates to origin entropy and thermodynamics in gravitating systems. He has contributed to discussions on how smooth structures in space-time may emerge from long-distance effective descriptions of complex underlying physical constructs. Balasubramanian has shown that dimensions of space can be regarded as emergent, arising from quantum entanglement and the information structure underlying lower-dimensional theories. He is also heavily involved in neuroscience, investigating the brain as a statistical computational device to uncover principles that govern the organization of neural circuits at various scales, from single cells to the entire brain. His work spans brain systems supporting various functions, including vision, audition, olfaction, spatial cognition, motor control, and decision-making. Additionally, he has explored the functional organization of adaptive immune systems of vertebrates and bacteria, as well as problems in statistical inference and machine learning, particularly focusing on the tradeoff between simplicity and accuracy in quantitative models. His research addresses the fundamental tradeoffs scientists encounter while inferring models of the world and machines learning from data.
