Dr. Vijay Sankaran

Biography

Vijay G. Sankaran is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Harvard University. His laboratory utilizes human genetic approaches to gain insight into blood cell production (hematopoiesis) and how this process is perturbed in various disease states. He focuses on the study of rare genetic blood disorders and the genetics underlying variations in hematopoiesis through large population-based studies. His work includes performing mechanistic and functional studies in primary human hematopoietic cells to obtain a deeper understanding of hematopoiesis. Dr. Sankaran's research is particularly interested in gaining insights into the genetic basis of a variety of blood disorders, understanding the developmental regulation of hemoglobin switching, and developing tools that are used to functionally follow human genetic studies. His contributions to the field have significant implications for the understanding and treatment of hematological conditions.
