Biography

Vijayakumar Bhagavatula is the U.A. & Helen Whitaker Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He received his B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from CMU. Since joining CMU in 1982, he has been a prominent faculty member and has held several key administrative roles including Interim Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of Carnegie Mellon University Africa. His research interests are in computer vision, pattern recognition, algorithm applications, coding, signal processing, and data storage systems. He has published extensively, including a book on correlation pattern recognition, 22 book chapters, over 410 conference papers, and 210 journal papers. As a leading researcher, he holds 15 patents and has served as a topical editor for Applied Optics and an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. He has received numerous honors, including being a Fellow of SPIE, IEEE, IAPR, AAAS, and NAI, reflecting his significant contributions to the fields of optical engineering and pattern recognition. He is actively involved in the academic community, frequently speaking at conferences and serving on program committees.
