Biography

Vikram Patel is the Paul Farmer Professor and Chair of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Professor in the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He co-leads the Department’s Mental Health Lab and the GlobalMentalHealth@Harvard initiative. His research focuses on the burden of mental health problems across the life course, including the association of social disadvantage and the use of community resources for prevention and treatment. Patel is a co-founder of the Movement for Global Mental Health and the Centre for Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He has played a central role in shaping policy and civil society action to address the substantial unmet need for mental health care in low- and middle-income countries. He is a Fellow of the UK’s Academy of Medical Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards including the Chalmers Medal and the John Dirk Canada Gairdner Award.
