Dr. Vikram Shankar

Biography

Vikram Shankar, MD, MPH, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at Stanford Health Care's Byers Eye Institute. As a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Shankar's clinical focus is on the medical and surgical care of cataracts and adult glaucoma, specifically utilizing premium lenses and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). His research interests lie in ophthalmic public health, biomedical devices, and digital health, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of entrepreneurship and public health within ophthalmology. Dr. Shankar's work aims to discover innovative solutions to impact millions of patients globally. He has published research on lung cancer metastasis to the optic nerve, pharmacologic therapies for glaucoma, and the surgical outcomes of novel glaucoma devices. His presentations across the nation have addressed topics such as screening rates for diabetic retinopathy influenced by insurance type and socioeconomic factors, the expansion of Medicaid, and health disparities. Dr. Shankar completed his MD/MPH at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and a glaucoma fellowship at Stanford's Byers Eye Institute. He is also a cofounder of an ophthalmic medical device startup focused on enhancing patient safety and reducing environmental impacts in eye care. Dr. Shankar is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
