Biography

Vinay Kamat is a Professor and the Head of the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. He holds multiple advanced degrees, including a PhD in Anthropology from Emory University and a Master's degree from the University of Arizona. With over 30 years of experience in ethnographic research, Kamat has specialized in medical anthropology and global health, conducting extensive studies in India and Tanzania. His research has primarily focused on the impact of neoliberal economic reforms on marginalized communities, exploring issues related to privatization of healthcare, urban malaria, and community responses to environmental changes. Kamat has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and several influential books, including "Silent Violence: Global Health, Malaria, Child Survival in Tanzania" and "Wounded Land: Conservation, Extraction, Human Well-Being in Coastal Tanzania." In addition to his research, Kamat has served as chair of the African Studies Minor Program at UBC and has received several awards for his teaching and scholarship. He is currently studying the effects of climate change on artisanal fishing communities in Tanzania, supported by SSHRC grants.
