Dr. Vincent Benítez

Biography

Vincent Benítez is Professor Emeritus specializing in Music Theory and Musicology. He holds a Ph.D. in music theory from Indiana University and a D.M.A. in organ from Arizona State University. His dissertation focused on Olivier Messiaen’s opera, Saint François d’Assise, exploring the analysis of musical-rhetorical figures in J. S. Bach’s Orgelbüchlein with implications for performance. Benítez is recognized for his expertise on Messiaen, evidenced by his numerous publications and presentations in the field. He has authored significant works on the composer, including 'Olivier Messiaen: A Research and Information Guide' and 'Olivier Messiaen's Opera, Saint François d'Assise.' He is currently engaged in writing a fourth book that investigates the concept of musical time in the later works of the composer. His research has been shared at multiple national and international music conferences, and he has lectured on Messiaen's work at prestigious institutions. Benítez's contributions also extend into Baroque music, music theory history, and popular music. His scholarly work includes contributions to multiple journals and conferences, addressing influential figures in music such as Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello.
