Dr. Vincent Denef

Biography

Vincent Denef is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on understanding the interactions within and between microbial communities and how these interactions shape microbial diversity, composition, and ecosystem functioning. The Denef Lab investigates the ecological implications of genetic diversity within species, particularly in microbial systems, and aims to understand their roles in processes such as nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas emissions. Through studying freshwater phytoplankton and bacterioplankton communities, the lab contributes to addressing critical environmental issues like water quality and carbon cycling. Denef teaches various courses that delve into microbiology and microbial ecology, emphasizing the importance of microbes in ecosystem health. He is committed to engaging students in understanding the vital roles that microbes play in shaping our environment and influencing human health.
