Biography

Vincent Sokalski is a Teaching Professor and Director of Student Inclusion & Community in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He obtained his B.S. in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie Mellon University in 2009 and 2011 respectively. Sokalski's research focuses on emerging phenomena in nanoscale magnetic spintronic materials, particularly their application in future computing technologies. He has extensive experience in studying magnetic thin films and has worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at CMU. Since joining the faculty in September 2013, he has engaged actively in promoting student inclusion and community within the engineering student body, bridging social and educational activities. He chairs the MSE department’s committee for community inclusion and also serves on the College of Engineering's committee for community engagement and outreach. His research has significant implications for the rapidly growing demand for efficient computational energy, addressing the pressing need for new materials that can improve existing technologies. Sokalski has contributed to the understanding of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and its role in stabilizing skyrmions, which promise unprecedented efficiency for future computer memory.
