Dr. Vinit Mahajan

Biography

Dr. Mahajan is a vitreoretinal surgeon scientist in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University. He directs the NIH-funded Molecular Surgery Omics Laboratory, which employs high-throughput methods in genomics, proteomics, and phenomics to uncover molecules involved in vitreoretinal disease. His research team is recognized for discovering the gene responsible for non-syndromic uveitis and has worked on gene editing therapies using CRISPR on human stem cells. They are also developing new precision health approaches for diagnosing retinal disease via molecular biomarkers. Dr. Mahajan is dedicated to training surgical fellows and has developed enhanced surgical techniques for complex retinal cases. He has authored numerous studies on surgical biomarkers that utilize personalized proteomics to tackle challenging retinal diseases, further establishing him as an innovator in his field. Dr. Mahajan obtained his bachelor's degree in Molecular Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and has undergone extensive training, including a residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, followed by a retina fellowship at the University of Iowa. He has published extensively, committed to advancing the field through his multifaceted research endeavors, and has held significant roles within the department since joining Stanford University in 2017.
