Biography

Violet Showers Johnson is a Professor in History at Texas A&M University, specializing in race, ethnicity, immigration, African American history, African history, and the history of the African Diaspora. She has an extensive academic background, having received her BA (Honors History) from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, an MA from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, and a Ph.D. from Boston College. Before joining Texas A&M University in 2012, she was a faculty member at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, where she chaired the Department of History and was the inaugural director of the Africana Studies Program, Women’s Global Leadership Center. At Texas A&M University, she has served in various leadership roles, including Director of Africana Studies and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Excellence Development. Her research focuses on the black immigrant experience in America and she has published several significant works including 'Black Bostonians: West Indians Boston, 1900-1950' and 'African American: West Africans Post-Civil Rights America'.
