Biography

Professor Virgil Gligor is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he has contributed significantly to the field of cybersecurity for over four decades. He has received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to his tenure at Carnegie Mellon University, Professor Gligor held a position at the University of Maryland from 1976 to 2007. He has also served as a visiting professor at prestigious institutions such as the University of Cambridge, ETH Zurich, and EPF Lausanne. His work has focused on critical areas such as access control mechanisms, penetration analysis, denial-of-service protection, and cryptographic protocols. His research addresses the challenges of trustworthy computing in the presence of active adversaries, aiming to generate a secure Internet environment. Professor Gligor has actively participated in various advisory boards and has consulted for major corporations including Burroughs and IBM, as well as serving on advisory boards for Microsoft, SAP, and Queen’s University Belfast. He was recently inducted into the Cybersecurity Hall of Fame and has received significant recognition for his contributions to cybersecurity research.
