Biography

Virginia D. Winn, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University, focusing on Reproductive, Stem Cell, and Perinatal Biology. With a medical education background from the University of Rochester, she completed her OBGYN residency and maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at UCSF. Dr. Winn is a recognized physician-scientist whose research revolves around human placental biology, aiming to translate findings into improved clinical care for mothers and babies. Her laboratory employs a combination of molecular, cellular, and translational studies to investigate the unique biological mechanisms of human placentation. Dr. Winn is also involved in numerous leadership roles, including Director of the Reproductive and Stem Cell Perinatal Biology Division and Program Director of the Women’s Reproductive Health Research NIH K12 program. She has been awarded the MCHRI Arline & Pete Harman Faculty Scholar award and currently holds the H&H Evergreen Scholar title. Her work has significantly contributed to the understanding of preeclampsia and its links to cardiovascular health, utilizing a life course multi-omics approach. Dr. Winn is an active member of several professional organizations and continues to mentor postdoctoral fellows and advise graduate students in her field.
