Dr. Vivek Gupta

Biography

Vivek Gupta is an Associate Professor and Head of the Vision Sciences Group at Macquarie University. He holds an NHMRC Dementia Leadership Career Development Fellowship and conducts research focusing on the mechanisms of retinal neurodegeneration diseases. His extensive research background includes cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, cloning, transgenic mouse models, clinical studies, public health data analysis, and pharmacological compound development. Dr. Gupta’s group utilizes retina models to investigate the underlying mechanisms of retinal disorders such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, as well as neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. His research examines retinal and optic nerve changes and correlates them with brain imaging and neuropsychological parameters in healthy aging and Alzheimer’s patients. He is actively engaged in targeted retinal gene therapy studies aimed at modulating signaling pathways to protect neurons in disease states. Dr. Gupta has undergone significant postdoctoral training in Switzerland and the USA, and has successfully secured competitive grants, resulting in over 170 published articles. Recent findings from his research have identified the pathological accumulation of amyloid beta protein in the retina associated with Alzheimer’s disease and glaucoma using human post-mortem tissue.
