Biography

Vivek Venkataraman earned a bachelor's degree in Physics and Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 2007, followed by a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College in 2016. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse. In 2021, Venkataraman joined the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, where he is the Principal Investigator of the Human Evolutionary Energetics Laboratory. He serves as Editor-in-Chief for the journal Hunter-Gatherer Research. His research interests focus on human evolution and behavior, as well as non-human primates. His laboratory emphasizes fieldwork and comparative studies, conducting ethnographic research on small-scale societies and behavioral studies of nonhuman primates to understand the selective pressures that have shaped human and primate lineages.
