Vivian Ramsey studied engineering science and economics at Oxford and worked for Ove Arup Partners for eight years, becoming a chartered civil engineer. He was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and in 2013 became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. After studying law at City University, he qualified as a barrister and commenced practice in 1981. He became Queen's Counsel in 1992 and was appointed head of Keating Chambers in London. In 2002, he was made a Bencher of the Middle Temple, and appointed as a High Court judge in 2005, becoming the judge in charge of the Technology and Construction Court in 2007. Upon retirement in 2014, he became an International Judge at the Singapore International Commercial Court, and currently acts as an arbitrator, mediator, and expert dispute board member globally. In 2018, he was awarded the Society of Construction Law's inaugural International Medal. He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Constructors in 2019-2020 and received an Honorary DSc Degree from the University of Westminster in 2021.
