Biography

Vivian Zayas is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Cornell University. Her research interests focus on the relational mind and how individuals mentally represent emotional complexity within their closest relationships. She investigates how people make inferences about social standing and navigate complex dynamic social interactions, particularly in relation to self-esteem and emotional regulation. Zayas employs a variety of methodologies in her research, including cognitive measures to assess implicit and nonconscious processes, as well as neural measures such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to understand brain structure and functioning. She is involved in both self-reports and behavioral observation techniques, aiming to understand how individuals think and feel. Zayas also leads the Person and Context Laboratory where she further explores these themes in her research and teaching.
