Biography

Vladimir Ivanovici studied ancient history and archaeology at the University of Bucharest and Freie Universität Berlin. He obtained his doctorate in ancient history from the University of Bucharest in 2011, with a thesis on early Christian martyrs as living images of Christ. In 2014, he completed a doctoral degree in art history from the Accademia di architettura Mendrisio, focusing on the theophanic dimension of Late Ancient Christian architecture in the upper-Adriatic area. His work explores the manifestations of the divine in Late Antiquity, emphasizing the relevance of the living body as a theophanic medium. Ivanovici's research intersects the study of cultic architecture, art, and anthropological views of religions, aiming to identify how divine artifices materialized during this period. From 2015 to 2017, he developed a research project at the Bibliotheca Hertziana-Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome, studying self-display techniques used in Late Antique Rome. He was a Summer Fellow at the Dumbarton Oaks Library Collection in Washington D.C. in 2019, affiliated with Harvard University. In 2021, he became a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Vienna, focusing on the ritual use of emotions during annual martyr celebrations in the Late Antique period, examining perceptions of the body and religious artifacts in transformative rituals and decorative construction techniques.
