Dr. Vladimir Muzykantov

Biography

Vladimir R. Muzykantov is the Founders Professor of Nanoparticle Research at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics. He has distinguished himself in the fields of vascular biology and drug/gene targeting, with a focus on understanding the mechanisms of endothelial injury and the development of targeted therapeutic strategies. His research efforts include characterizing surface antigens on normal and pathologically altered endothelial cells and exploring mechanisms of oxidative stress. He leads a laboratory that works on the controlled site-specific delivery of drugs to pulmonary vascular endothelium, developing methods to transport genetic materials and enzyme therapeutics to specific cellular compartments. His innovative work has implications in the treatment of various pulmonary conditions. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of the role of immune responses in vascular biology and has explored the use of red blood cells as natural carriers for drug delivery.
