Biography

Vladyslav Vyazovskiy is a Professor at the University of Oxford, where he serves as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. His research focuses on Sleep Physiology, examining the mechanisms that regulate sleep and the biological purpose behind it. Over decades, our understanding of sleep has significantly expanded, prompting critical questions like 'Why do we sleep?' and 'What regulates sleep patterns?' His work posits that sleep may be a fundamental requirement for physiological processes, rather than merely an incidental consequence of daily activities. Collaborating with various research groups, including the DPAG and Kavli Institute, Professor Vyazovskiy employs diverse methodologies, such as cortical stimulation and mathematical modeling, to study sleep's complex interactions with behavior and neural networks. Additionally, his research explores altered states of consciousness related to sleep and hibernation, aiming to reveal the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms.
