Biography

Dr. Vlastimil Masek attended the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, completing a five-year Dipl. Ing. degree in mechanical engineering at the University of West Bohemia in the Czech Republic. He earned his MSc. and PhD degrees with a focus on mechatronics and control engineering, specializing in airborne ultrasonic sensing. Following his educational endeavors, Dr. Masek completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Satellite Venture Business Laboratory in Tokyo before moving to Sweden to serve as a research scientist at ABB Corporate Research for three years. In January 2003, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His teaching encompasses topics such as industrial control instrumentation, signal conditioning, sensors, and automatic control, and he plays an active role in the Oil and Gas Development Group, where he teaches supervisory control, data acquisition, and remote sensing in oil and gas process control. Dr. Masek is a licensed professional engineer with research interests in multiphase flow sensing, in-flow phase separation, oil spill remediation, wide-area ocean current sensing using transit time acoustics, and seabed marine instrumentation networks, with ongoing projects including a commercial spin-off called Seaformatics Systems Inc.
