Professor Dr. Volker Lilienthal

Biography

Volker Lilienthal is a professor of journalism at the University of Hamburg, where he holds the Rudolf Augstein endowed professorship. He earned a Diplom degree in journalism from TU Dortmund University in 1983 and completed a doctorate in modern German literature at the University of Siegen in 1987. Before his academic career, Lilienthal worked as an editor for the Evangelical Press Service, managing the agency from 2005 until his appointment at Universität Hamburg in 2009. His research interests lie in quality journalism and media criticism, and he has served as a juror for awards recognizing excellence in journalism. Lilienthal has published extensively, co-editing works that address various topics in journalism, including digital journalism and health journalism. He is a recognized voice in the field, having been elected as an independent expert consultant on the board of directors of Deutschlandradio and serving as chairman of ProJournal e.V., which promotes journalism and mass communication.
