Biography

Professor Volker Manuth is anemeritus art historian at Radboud University, specializing in the art of the Early Modern Period with a strong focus on painting, drawing, and printmaking from the northern and southern Netherlands, England, and German-speaking countries during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His research delves into Christian iconography and the interplay of religious objects within the artistic context, underpinned by a Catholic-Protestant theological background. He has a keen interest in the production of art during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, with a particular emphasis on figures such as Albrecht Dürer and his contemporaries, as well as Rembrandt and the Rembrandt school. Manuth studies the history of portraits, examining representations of individuals and groups from biblical, mythological, and historical narratives, as well as the history of collecting and the reception of Dutch art during its Golden Age. In addition to his academic pursuits, he serves as an honorary curator of 17th century art at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where he also contributes as a scientific advisor.
