Professor Sieber’s Chair focuses on developing technical processes for sustainable production of bulk fine chemicals from biogenic raw materials and renewable energy. The research emphasizes industrial biotechnology, applying methods from biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology to develop new biocatalysts, including enzymes and microorganisms that facilitate combined chemical catalysts in cascade reactions. After studying chemistry at the University of Bayreuth and the University of Delaware, he obtained his doctorate and worked as a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology. Following a brief period at McKinsey & Co., Professor Sieber held various positions in the chemicals industry from 2001 to 2008, including roles at Degussa and Süd-Chemie. He became a full professor at TUM in late 2008 and established the Fraunhofer Institute’s branch BioCat in 2009, which he currently directs.
