Biography

Volkher Scharnhorst is a part-time professor in the Clinical Chemistry research group within the Chemical Biology department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. His research focuses on the use of biomarkers for diagnosing and monitoring diseases, with an emphasis on improving analytical techniques and the interpretation of test results. As a clinical chemist, Scharnhorst is dedicated to translating laboratory analysis results into information that is relevant for doctors in treating patients. He specializes in areas of general laboratory medicine and diagnostics related to blood diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, and has conducted clinical research on the diagnosis of disorders of the cardiovascular system. Scharnhorst earned his MSc in Biology from Leiden University in 2000 and subsequently received his PhD from the department of Medical Biochemistry, where his research focused on 'W1 proteins functions in growth differentiation.' He trained as a resident in clinical chemistry at Máxima Medical Centre in Veldhoven, and during this time he became a lecturer in chemical pathology at Fontys Hogeschool Eindhoven. In 2004, he was admitted to the register of clinical chemists and took a position at Atrium Medical Centre Heerlen (now Zuyderland hospital). In 2006, he continued his career at Catharina Hospital Eindhoven, and by 2007 he became the head of the clinical laboratory there. In 2012, he was appointed lecturer at Eindhoven University of Technology and in 2014, he became a part-time Professor of Clinical Chemistry in the department of Biomedical Engineering, focusing on Chemical Biology research.
