Dr. Vona Groarke

Biography

Vona Groarke joined the Creative Writing team at the University of Manchester in September 2007. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork, she has held positions in the UK, the United States, and Norway. In 2004, she co-held the Heimbold Chair in Irish Studies at Villanova University, and from 2005 to 2007, she served as poet-in-residence at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over the past twenty years, Groarke has published ten titles with Gallery Press, including notable poetry collections such as 'Shale' (1994), 'People's Houses' (1999), and 'Flight' (2002), the latter of which was shortlisted for the Forward Prize in 2002 and won the Michael Hartnett Award in 2003. Her works have also included book-length essays and edited editions of classic poems. Groarke's poetry has been translated into seven languages and she has been published in various well-known magazines. In 2010, she was elected to Aosdána, an Irish association of artists. She has served as a judge for several poetry prizes and has held editorial roles at prominent literary journals.
