Biography

Vytas Bankaitis holds the E.L. Wehner-Welch Foundation Chair at Texas A&M University's Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine. His research focuses on lipid-mediated signal transduction pathways and their role in essential cellular functions. Bankaitis has a keen interest in phosphatidylinositol/phosphatidylcholine transfer proteins (PITPs) and employs a multidisciplinary approach that includes biochemical characterization and genetic analyses to explore this enigmatic class of proteins. His lab investigates two main groups: one examining the mechanisms of fungal and plant PITPs, and another generating knockout mice to study specific mammalian PITP isoforms. Notably, his work has revealed key interfaces that PITPs provide in lipid-driven metabolic reactions and their implications in cellular signaling pathways. His lab’s innovative research has discovered important linkages between lipid metabolism and membrane trafficking, yielding essential insights into potential cancer mechanisms and novel drug development. With a strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry, Bankaitis is also developing strategies to identify small molecule inhibitors of PITPs and enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, demonstrating the significance of lipids in cellular health and disease.
