Biography

W. Mark Saltzman is an engineer and educator whose research has significantly impacted fields such as drug delivery, biomaterials, nanobiotechnology, and tissue engineering. He has published more than 350 research papers and holds numerous patents in these areas. Saltzman is the sole author of textbooks including 'Biomedical Engineering,' 'Tissue Engineering,' and 'Drug Delivery.' With over 35 years of experience, he has led independent research programs at prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins, Cornell, and Yale. His work includes developing mathematical models for the design of drug delivery systems and creating new techniques for delivering therapies to conditions such as brain tumors and STDs. He has been a primary mentor to 43 doctoral students and 27 postdoctoral associates, many of whom have established their research programs at leading universities. Saltzman graduated from Iowa State University with a BS in Chemical Engineering and obtained both his MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was appointed Goizueta Foundation Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Yale in 2002, where he also served as the founding chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and head of Jonathan Edwards College from 2016 to 2022. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering.
