Biography

Maggi Leung is a Professor of International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, where she also chairs the Governance Inclusive Development research group. She is a geographer and migration scholar whose research examines the socio-spatial impacts of migration mobilities, particularly in contexts affected by climate change. Having completed her higher education in the United States, she obtained her doctorate in Human Geography from Bremen University in 2002. Maggi has previously worked as a lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. In November 2010, she took up the position of Assistant Professor at the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University, where she became an Associate Professor in 2011 before her appointment at the University of Amsterdam. Her fieldwork-based research spans Asia (including Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam), Africa (Ethiopia and Zambia), and Europe (Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK). A committed educator, Maggi has designed Bachelor's and Master's courses and has served as an editor for several academic publications. She is actively involved in research that seeks to co-create and disseminate knowledge to a range of audiences.
