Biography

Wade Davis is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. He is a renowned writer, photographer, and filmmaker whose work has taken him across the Amazon, Tibet, Africa, Australia, Polynesia, and the Arctic. He serves as the Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013 and holds the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at UBC. Davis is the author of 22 books, including 'River', 'Wayfinders', and 'Silence', the latter winning the prestigious 2012 Samuel Johnson Prize for nonfiction in the English language. He earned his Ph.D. in ethnobotany from Harvard University and aims to inspire his students through experiential learning in public speaking, literary writing, and filmmaking. His research centers on biological and cultural diversity, as well as the activism embraced by anthropology. He has received numerous awards, including 11 honorary degrees and the 2016 Gold Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Davis also became a Member of the Order of Canada in 2016 and was honored as an Honorary Citizen of Colombia in 2018.
