Biography

Wael Asaad is the Sidney Fox Dorothea Doctors Fox Professor in Ophthalmology and Visual Science, as well as a Professor of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience at Brown University. He is the Director of Functional Epilepsy Neurosurgery at Rhode Island Hospital and serves as Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Neurosurgery. His research primarily focuses on neurophysiology and neuromodulation in human and animal subjects. Dr. Asaad completed his undergraduate degree at Amherst College, obtained his PhD in Systems Neuroscience from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and earned his MD from Yale University. He completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. His research aims to enhance the understanding of basic neural circuit mechanisms involved in learning, memory, and decision-making, with applications for alleviating cognitive, affective, and motor sequelae of human neurological illness and injury. His clinical interests include functional neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, and psychiatric neurosurgery, focusing on methods such as deep brain stimulation and responsive neurostimulation. He has been a faculty member at Brown University since 2011 and is involved in various funded research initiatives.
