Dr. Wafa Khamri's research focuses on the impaired peripheral immune responses associated with acute and chronic liver diseases. The Liver Immunology Research group, which she leads, aims to investigate the defective immune mechanisms that contribute to the susceptibility of patients to infections during episodes of acute and chronic liver failure. Her current research themes include understanding the role of peripheral suppressor T and B cells in the failure to mount proper adaptive immune responses and delineating the molecular and metabolic drivers responsible for the induction and propagation of immunosuppressive activities in liver failure patients. Dr. Khamri's work is aimed at enhancing targeted immunotherapy strategies to restore critical immune responses and improve patient outcomes. Additionally, she is involved in projects evaluating myeloid immune checkpoint modulation in hepatocellular carcinoma and understanding the pathogenesis of immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced hepatitis. She has received funding for her work from organizations such as the NIHR Imperial BRC and the Rosetrees Charitable Trust.
