Biography

Wai-Ching Lam is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Vice-Chair of Education at the University of Toronto. She is also the Director of Continuing Professional Development at the University Health Network - Toronto Western Hospital. Dr. Lam earned her MD from the University of Manitoba in 1982 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1991 after completing her training at McGill University. She is a member of the Clinical Studies Resource Centre at the Toronto Western Research Institute. Dr. Lam's research contributions are well recognized, with publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and numerous abstracts. Her areas of expertise include the effects of intraocular gas in the eye, retinopathy associated with sickle cell disease, and various medical and surgical retinal conditions. Dr. Lam’s current clinical research focuses on age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular diseases. She is actively involved in teaching and medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has received multiple teaching awards, including the PAIRO teaching award in 1998 and the Postgraduate Medical Education Award for excellence in teaching performance, mentorship, and advocacy in 2006.
