Biography

Wajiha Akhtar is the Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship Director and Public Health Workforce Development Pathways Director at the Population Health Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on investigating novel approaches to prevent the infectious disease consequences of injection drug use, particularly through community-based research. Before joining the institute, Wajiha served as an Associate Scientist in the Department of Medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, where she applied epidemiological methods to assess policies related to community-level health outcomes. Her prior experience includes working as an Injury and Violence Prevention Epidemiologist at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and assessing health care utilization among people living with HIV at the District of Columbia Department of Health. Wajiha specializes in engaging stakeholders to decrease health inequities and optimize public health strategies. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami and a Master's and Doctorate in Epidemiology from the University of Florida. Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors for the City Schools of Madison, Wisconsin, and HEART, a national non-profit organization promoting sexual health and violence literacy in Muslim communities.
