Biography

Walid Raad is a contemporary media artist whose work focuses on the representation of traumatic historical events, particularly in Lebanon during the wars from 1975 to 1991. He is known for his engagement with the complexities of documenting physical and psychological violence through various mediums, including video, photography, and literary essays. Raad is a member of the Atlas Group, a fictional collective that produces his artistic work. His notable exhibitions include Documenta 11 in Kassel, the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennial in New York, and the Ayloul Festival in Beirut, among others across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. He received his B.F.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1989 and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Cultural Visual Studies from the University of Rochester in 1993 and 1996, respectively. He currently lives and works in New York.
