Biography

Walter Buenger is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, holding the Summerly Foundation Chair in Texas History and serving as Chief Historian for the Texas State Historical Association. His research focuses on the interactions of history and memory in the context of Texas from 1810 to 1970. Buenger has received several accolades, including the Coral H. Tullis Award for his book 'The Path Modern South: Northeast Texas Reconstruction Great Depression' published in 2001. Prior to his tenure at UT Austin, he led the history department at Texas A&M University. Buenger earned his Ph.D. in History from Rice University in 1979, following an M.A. in History in 1977 and a B.A. in History in 1973, also from Rice University.
