Walter Busuttil, appointed Visiting Professor at the King’s Centre for Military Health Research (KCMHR) in January 2022, graduated as a Medical Doctor from the University of Manchester in 1983. He served in the RAF as a General Duties Medical Officer at fast jet flying stations and completed his General Practice Training before retraining in psychiatry through the RAF Training Scheme, which included time at the Maudsley and Oxford. He was appointed Consultant Psychiatrist in 1994 and was part of the team that retrieved and rehabilitated hostages in Beirut. He has been involved in developing services for personnel returning from the Gulf War and has treated adult survivors of sexual abuse at Ticehurst House Hospital for seven years. Walter has held multiple leadership roles in various organizations, including Medical Director at Partnerships in Care and Combat Stress, overseeing national community residential programs and establishing a research department at Combat Stress in collaboration with KCMHR. He has published extensively on veterans' mental health, with about 90 publications and 19 book chapters, and has been active in public engagement related to PTSD since 2007. He is a founder member of the Five Eyes Mental Health Research Collaborative and an advisor to Veterans' ministers in the Five Eyes Countries. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his services to military families in 2016 and became a Lifetime Member of the Association of Psychiatry Malta in 2019.
