Biography

Professor Walter Timo de Vries specializes in smart and responsible land management, focusing particularly on urban and rural development, as well as public restrictions and capacity development in land policy. He supervises doctoral candidates on important issues such as spatial development strategies, land tenure arrangements, and spatial justice. His work is underscored by a theoretical framework for ‘Human Geodesy’. de Vries completed his geodetic engineering degree at the Technical University of Delft in 1988 and obtained his PhD from Rotterdam. He has worked on various international projects across Asia, Africa, and South America and was affiliated with UNITAR in Geneva in 1994 and later with the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente from 1994 until 2015. In 2015, he was appointed to a chair position at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where he also directs the Master and PhD programs in Land Management and Land Tenure, and serves as the Dean of Studies in the Geodesy and Geoinformatics programs. Additionally, he coordinates TUM.Africa and is an active member of the German Geodetic Commission and the Bayern Academy for Rural Space.
