Dr. Walter Herbst

Biography

Walter Herbst is a Clinical Professor Emeritus in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University. He holds a BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois, an MS in Management from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and a PhD from Coventry University. He has received significant recognition for his contributions to the field, including the Charles Deering McCormick Distinguished Professor Award from Northwestern University in 2015 and being named a Distinguished Alumnus by the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois. Professor Herbst has won the Edison Award multiple times and was recognized as Faculty of the Year for the Master of Product Design and Development Program in 2009. He holds 125 patents and is listed among 'Who's Who in American Inventors'. His expertise lies in product design, development, and marketing, and he frequently contributes articles to trade journals and speaks at national and international industry events. He founded Herbst LaZar Bell Inc. in 1962, which grew to be one of the largest independently owned product design and development firms in the country. He created the Master of Product Design and Development Management Program at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, focusing on comprehensive issues related to product development.
