Biography

Walter N. Kernan, MD, is an Emeritus Professor and Senior Research Scientist at Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his medical degree at Dartmouth College, followed by a residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a fellowship at the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale. Dr. Kernan has significantly contributed to the field of internal medicine, particularly in general internal medicine and cerebrovascular disease. He founded and directed the Ambulatory Component of the Internal Medicine Clerkship from 1993 to 2015, during which time he merged it with psychiatry into the Integrated Clerkship of Primary Care Psychiatry. His research spans clinical trials on new therapies for stroke prevention, prognosis cohort studies, case-control studies on risk factors, and the quality of care. He was the principal investigator for an NIH-funded trial investigating insulin resistance intervention in stroke, completed in 2016. Currently, his research projects include observational studies and clinical trials focused on resident training in primary care, alongside secondary prevention of stroke.
