Biography

Walter Ladwig III is a political scientist specializing in foreign policy, South Asian security, irregular warfare, and the geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific. His teaching primarily focuses on the conduct of statecraft and Cold War history. He published the book "The Forgotten Front: Patron-Client Relationships in Counter Insurgency" (Cambridge, 2017), which examines the often difficult relations between local governments and external supporters in counterinsurgency contexts. Currently, he is writing a book on Indian defense policy. Walter's scholarly works have been published in several academic journals including International Security and Journal of Strategic Studies. His commentary has appeared in major media outlets such as The Economist and The Washington Post. He has a PhD in International Relations from the University of Oxford and a Master’s in Public Affairs from Princeton University. He received his Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and International Relations from the University of Southern California. At King's College London, Walter is the Course Director for the BA International Relations and supervises master's dissertations. His research interests include military strategy and legislative behavior in developing democracies, and he is a member of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies.
