Dr. Wan Fokkink

Biography

Wan Fokkink is a Full Professor specializing in Theoretical Computer Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He earned his MSc in Mathematics in 1990 and completed his PhD in Computer Science in 1994 at the University of Amsterdam, where he conducted his doctoral research at CWI Amsterdam. He has held postdoctoral positions at Utrecht University and served as a lecturer at the University of Swansea, where he led the Embedded Systems research group from 2001. In 2004, he became the head of the Theoretical Computer Science group at VU. Fokkink has been involved in various academic roles, including a part-time professorship in Model-Based System Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology since 2012. His research expertise lies in the design and analysis of distributed systems, with a focus on formal analysis of computer protocols, supervisory control synthesis, concurrency theory, and distributed algorithms. He has authored several textbooks, including "Introduction to Process Algebra" and "Modelling Distributed Systems," as well as "Distributed Algorithms: Intuitive Approach." Fokkink is an editor for the open-access journal Logical Methods in Computer Science and co-founder of the Electronic Proceedings in Theoretical Computer Science. He holds memberships in various academic committees and leads courses on Logic Sets, Concurrency & Multithreading, and Protocol Validation at VU.
