Biography

Wanying Kang joined the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2022. She holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in Physics from Peking University. Prior to her faculty appointment, Kang was appointed as the Lorenz-Houghton Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in 2020, where she worked with renowned scholars John Marshall and Sara Seager. Her research focuses on large-scale atmospheric and oceanic dynamics and their effects on climate, as applied to terrestrial and planetary bodies. Kang utilizes theories and numerical modeling to investigate geophysical fluid dynamics in atmospheres and oceans, including the study of exoplanets and icy satellites like Saturn’s Enceladus and Titan. She aims to apply tools developed in climate science to understand the potential habitability of other planets and the detection of biosignatures. Her investigations into extreme worlds yield insights into ancient planetary conditions, formation, and climate evolution.
