Warren D. Allmon is the Director of the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) in Ithaca, NY, and holds the position of Hunter R. Rawlings III Professor of Paleontology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. He earned his A.B. in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University in 1988. Allmon served as Assistant Professor of Geology at the University of South Florida, Tampa, before becoming PRI’s fourth Director in 1992. He has been instrumental in rejuvenating PRI’s internationally-known fossil collections and has initiated various Earth science education programs. Under his leadership, PRI has developed a major educational exhibit facility, the Museum of the Earth, which opened in September 2003. His primary research interests include macroevolution and paleoecology, especially focusing on the ecology and maintenance of biological diversity as reflected in the geological record, notably through the study of Cenozoic marine gastropods. Allmon has authored over 250 technical and popular publications, and he is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and the Paleontological Society.
