Biography

Warren Breckman is the Sheldon Lucy Hackney Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in modern European intellectual and cultural history. Breckman received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1993, following an M.A. in 1988 and a B.A. in 1986 from the same institution. His published works include notable titles such as 'Karl Marx, Young Hegelians, Origins of Radical Social Theory: Dethroning Self' (Cambridge, 1999; paperback 2001), 'European Romanticism: A Brief History with Documents' (Bedford, 2007; Hackett, 2015), and 'Adventures in the Symbolic: Postmarxism and Radical Democracy' (Columbia University Press, 2013). He has served as an editor for significant volumes, including 'The Cambridge History of Modern European Thought' (Cambridge, 2019). Breckman has been a fellow of prestigious institutions such as the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung and the American Academy in Berlin. He has held executive editorial positions, including co-editor of the Journal of the History of Ideas and founding editor of Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte. As an educator, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on various themes related to modern intellectual history, political thought, and psychoanalysis. Breckman has been recognized for his teaching excellence with the Richard S. Dunn Award. He actively supervises graduate students on a range of topics concerning early modern and contemporary intellectual history.
